Garden update

The garden currently doesn’t have much in it. The lettuce, radishes, and beets have just barely started to sprout. Other things – green beans, tomatoes, soybeans, and kohlrabi – I’ve started inside.  But there is a master plan! Soon this baby will be all filled up.

Surprise from Burpee!

2016-03-26 14.26.33 HDR

I promise that a big post on this year’s garden layout is in the works, but I wanted to share this ASAP! Recently I ordered some heirloom tomato seeds from Burpee. I was already quite excited for their arrival (this will be my first attempt at growing tomatoes from seeds), but I was even more excited because when I opened the envelope, something unexpected popped out. FREE SEEDS!

Burpee sent along a free packet of its bee and butterfly mix. Especially in a city, it’s important to keep in mind the pollinators. Plus, what girl (or guy!) doesn’t love getting surprise flowers? According to the package, this deal goes on through the end of May. So if you were planning to stock up on seeds, check out Burpee.com and get a little something extra to help you have a successful and beautiful season!

Meet Blue

I hope that the weather is to blame, and that I didn’t just plant a garden full of duds. Only time will tell.

I did start some basil, green beans, kohlrabi, and zinnias inside, some of which have sprouted. I’m going to save those longer posts on my whole garden plan and starting seeds inside for later, though. For now, I’ll tell  you about one of our first plants, a 2015 impulsively-purchased blueberry bush named Blue.     Continue reading

Flowers on Friday

I came back from a week-long vacation, which, as always, is sort of a drag. On the bright side, though, DC warmed up substantially while I was gone, and I was greeted at home by these great flowers!

This is the first of what I hope will be a weekly post that contains not much writing, just pictures of flowers I’ve seen throughout the week.

Welcome to my garden

Before we started our serious quest for a home in D.C., we spent several months navigating the house-vs-condo debate that I imagine all house hunters in mid-sized metropolitan areas must traverse. Condos are more centrally located. A house would have more space. Condos have gyms and front desks. Houses are a lot of work when you have a full time job. But a house would make it easier to have a dog… How would we ever decide?
